Acquiring Information about Iraq

Given the contentious nature of many key assertions about Iraq and Saddam—the existence of weapons of mass destruction and connections to anti-US terrorists—we chose to measure information about Iraq and unfolding events with simple factual questions in the Threat and National Security Survey (TNSS) to which there were clearly correct answers. The questions were designed to tap knowledge of facts—some of which were easy and others more difficult to acquire—in order to differentiate between those who were paying more and less attention to news on Iraq. Correct answers to all these questions would have been known to those attending most closely to the news. We present in table 5.1 the specific Iraq knowledge questions included in the TNSS and the percentage who answered each question correctly. Ultimately, when taken together, the five questions provide a good measure of each person’s exposure to, and retention of, information about Iraq. The observed range in the number of correct answers indicates substantial variation among Americans in their knowledge of Iraq at that time. Nearly three out of every four (73%) Americans in the TNSS could name one country that bordered on Iraq. But only about one in twenty (6%) could identify the name of the Iraqi ruling political party.
